Conference on Data Ethics for Historical Research in a Digital Era

The Leibniz Institute for European History (IEG) will host the international conference Data Ethics for Historical Research in a Digital Era in Mainz, Germany, from 10 to 12 November 2025. The conference will focus on the ethical challenges of using data in digital historical research, such as bias, colonial contexts, and the responsible use of ego documents.

Contributions from the Huygens Institute

Staff members of the Huygens Institute will contribute to the programme in the following ways:

On 10 November at 2:30 p.m., they will present a session entitled ‘Liberating Labels’. Decolonising Language Use in Historical Collection Management and Data Contextualisation’. Presentation by Manjusha Kuruppath, Dung Phám and Juliette Huijgen.

On 12 November at 9:00 a.m., there will be a workshop on contextualising datasets using data envelopes and datasheets. A workshop led by Maria Eskevich, Sebastiaan Derks, Mirjam Raaphorst and Steven Claeyssens, offering a hands-on session and insight into the SSHOC-NL web tool currently under development
