Willem Frederik Hermans, Complete Works

This project will publish all separately published works and uncollected texts written by Dutch author Willem Frederik Hermans within a multi volume printed scholarly edition, which is based upon the last authorized versions of the texts. The Complete Works comprise 23 to 24 volumes of 800 to 1,000 pages each that have been ordered according to genre: Novels (6 volumes), Stories and novellas (2 volumes), Poems (1 volume), Stage plays and scenarios (1 volume), Essays (7 volumes), Visual work (1 volume), Anthologies and translations (1 volume), Uncollected work (3 or 4 volumes) and Other work (1 volume).

The edited texts of the edition are based upon the The last authorized (ultima manus) versions of the published texts. The two primary bibliographies Het bibliografische universum van Willem Frederik Hermans (Frans A. Janssen and Sonja van Stek 2000, revised edition 2005) and Schrijven is verbluffen. Bibliografie van de verspreide publicaties van Willem Frederik Hermans (Rob Delvigne and Frans A. Janssen 1996, revised edition 2005) play an indispensable role in the process of establishing the critical texts and together offer a virtually comprehensive overview of Hermans’s published work. The critical texts for the edition are based upon textual comparison of all relevant textual sources, thereby making use of the collation sofware Collate X.

The Complete Works of Willem Frederik Hermans are published in close cooperation with the Willem Frederik Hermans Estate (Willem Frederik Hermans Institute) and Dutch publisher De Bezige Bij. The edition is intended for academics as well as the broader general audience. Volumes within the edition appear as from 2005.
