Biography

Ineke Huysman is a historian at the Huygens Institute/NL-Lab and specialises in the political and cultural history of the early modern Netherlands. Her work focuses on the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with an emphasis on correspondence as a key source for political decision-making, reputation-building and international networks.

She is working on large-scale digital editions of early modern letters and plays a central role in making Johan de Witt’s correspondence accessible. In collaboration with, amongst others, Early Modern Letters Online, she contributes to the development of sustainable research infrastructure for historical correspondence. Her work combines substantive analysis with digital data and methods.

In addition, she is project leader of ‘Stadhoudersvrouwen’ (Wives of the Stadtholders), which focuses on the correspondence of the women associated with the House of Orange. This project demonstrates how they were politically and culturally active within the Republic and within a broader European network. The project will culminate in a digital edition and an exhibition currently in preparation.

Her research focuses on themes such as diplomacy, the circulation of information, gossip and reputation. She investigates how these factors influenced the functioning of political systems. In addition to academic publications, she develops public-facing projects that bring together research, storytelling and culture.
