‘Anne Frank wanted to do more than just keep a diary’
‘Few people know that Anne Frank’s diary, as we know it and as the world knows it, was compiled by her father Otto Frank from fragments of her writings. Anne wrote much more than that. Writing was also very important to her. She wanted to do more than just keep a diary. She wanted to become a writer. Or a journalist.’
Peter de Bruijn and Elli Bleeker of the Huygens Institute spent years researching the literary talent of Anne Frank, who became world famous for her diary about life in the secret annex. Their research can be read in the book Anne Frank, schrijfster (Dutch only).
Listen to Elli Bleeker in conversation with Simone Weimans in Met het oog op morgen on Radio 1 (14 November 2025).
