Biography

Jona Schlegel is a landscape archaeologist working at the intersection of digital humanities, digital infrastructures, and visual science communication. A Master of Science in Landscape Archaeology was completed in 2018 at HTW Berlin and the Free University of Berlin (Germany), with a focus on non-invasive methodologies, including geophysical prospection, remote sensing, and spatial data analysis. Between 2018 and 2023, she worked at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology in Vienna (Austria), concentrating on large-scale prospection and data interpretation. Later work within the INDIGO project addressed graffiti archaeology, which contributed to an increasing focus on the communication of complex archaeological data beyond specialist audiences.

Following a move to Amsterdam, Jona Schlegel worked at the Necessary Reunions project (2025) in the Huygens Institute, focusing on web development, interface design, web annotation, and the integration of linked open data, including gazetteer development. Her current work within the institute is situated at the LivesLab and includes contributions to the GLOBALISE project, with a focus on UX/UI design, as well as the Suriname Time Machine / Citizen Science Incubator. In the last mentioned project, she is engaged with data modelling, web development, and participatory approaches to cultural heritage data.
