Leo Lucassen new director IISH

The KNAW appoints Leo Lucassen as director of the International Institute of Social History (IISH). Earlier this week it was announced that the current director Henk Wals will be leaving the IISH to become a director at the KNAW institute DANS. Both start at the beginning of April in their new position.

Lucassen has been research director of the IISH since 2014, furthermore, he holds the chair of Global Labor and Migration History in Leiden and is an assistant professor at the University of Aalborg (Denmark). Lucassen specialises in global migration history, urban history, labor history, state formation, eugenics and other socio-political developments in modern states. Lucassen is a former fellow of the New School for Social Research in New York and The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS). In 2011 he became a member of the Academia Europaea and last year he was elected a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences. Lucassen is chairman of the editorial board of the International Review of Social History (IRSH) and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Global History (JGH).
