Vlootschouw returns on Friday 27 June 2025 at The National Maritime Museum. The third edition of Vlootschouw will take place on Friday 27 June 2025 at The National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. Vlootschouw is a biennial event for anyone with an interest in the maritime history of the Netherlands and Belgium. The day includes an information market and a conference programme. Professor Dr Jelle van Lottum, affiliated with the Huygens Institute, is a member of the Vlootschouw van de Lage Landen Committee, which is organising the event.

Old ship’s logs for new climate research
Jelle van Lottum will speak about the project Weer leren van het verleden (Learning About Weather from the Past), a unique collaboration between the Huygens Institute, the University of Twente, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), and the National Archives. This project explores how historical weather data from 200-year-old logbooks of Dutch naval ships can contribute to new climate research.

Maritime Networks and Sources
In addition to Jelle van Lottum, more researchers from the Huygens Institute will be present. Under the heading “Maritime Networks 1652-1815,” Marijcke Schillings can answer questions about the Dutch Prize Papers collection, a study of the networks of seafarers in the 17th century based on letters, and the trade networks in the 17th century to 19th century based on bills of lading (freight bills). Gerhard de Kok and Marja de Keuning can answer questions about the Maritime Resources Network and the Maritime Portal.

A meeting place for everyone
Vlootschouw welcomes anyone with an affinity for the maritime past of the Netherlands and Belgium. Professionals, students, and enthusiasts from all maritime-historical disciplines are invited to exchange knowledge and discuss plans for joint projects, funding applications, or collaborative activities.
