Lecture: Perceptions of Literariness Across Borders

Location Online
Start/end 14:00–15:30 hrs CET

What constitutes a ‘literary’ book? And is there a shift in perspective when one traverses frontiers, navigating between languages, cultures and diverse readerships? On 20 November 2025, Prof. Karina van Dalen-Oskam (Huygens Institute, University of Amsterdam) will deliver the Annual Lecture of the International Association for Comparative Literature (AILC-ICLA), entitled ‘Perceptions of Literariness Across Borders’.

In her lecture, Prof. Van Dalen-Oskam will discuss two pioneering projects: The Riddle of Literary Quality and Novel Perceptions: Towards an Inclusive Canon. She will demonstrate how the combination of readers, data and digital text analysis sheds new light on what constitutes “good literature” (and what does not).
