Specialisation Early modern history and accessibility of archives

Renate Smit (1998) obtained a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Amsterdam with a minor ‘Golden Age’ and continued her studies with a research master’s degree in History and a dual master’s degree in Archival and Information Studies at the same university. During her studies, she mainly focused on the socio-cultural history of the Dutch Republic and its political culture and making historical archives (more) accessible, including through the use of artificial intelligence.

She has been involved in the GLOBALISE project since September 2023, first as an intern and from February 2024 as a research assistant. Within the project, she works on document classification and creating a thesaurus for VOC occupations.

In addition to her work at GLOBALISE, she has been editor (responsible for final editing) of Holland Historisch Tijdschrift since March 2024.
