Stories from the Archives

Location KNAW Trippenhuis - Kloveniersburgwal 29, Amsterdam
Start/end 19:30 - 21:00

June 9 is International Archives Day. This evening, we will join researchers and staff in exploring the opportunities and challenges involved in preserving and making historical material accessible. Archives are not merely “dusty collections of old papers,” but rather vibrant and fascinating places brimming with stories and sensitivities. This gathering will focus on one of the oldest and one of the youngest archives in the Netherlands: those of the VOC and the Muslim Archive.

GLOBALISE is an NWO-funded project aimed at using new methods to provide unprecedented access to documents that shed light on the activities of the VOC and the history of societies in early modern Asia, Africa, and Australia. This evening, Matthias van Rossum will discuss the project’s development and the challenges involved. It is a project of the Huygens Institute in collaboration with the International Institute of Social History, the KNAW Humanities Cluster, VU University Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam, and the National Archives.

The Muslim Archive focuses on collecting, preserving, and making accessible personal stories, historical documents, and cultural-religious heritage. The archive’s goal is to broaden the collective memory of the Netherlands and contribute to a society in which the shared history of all citizens is recognized. Kamel Essabane and Mirjam Shatanawi will discuss the background and challenges facing this young archive.
