Biography

Stella Verkijk obtained two BA degrees from Utrecht University in English Language and Culture and Spanish Language and Culture. She then studied for a Research Master’s in Human Language Technology at VU University Amsterdam, graduating with distinction. For her Master’s thesis, she conducted research into the development of language technology for hospitals. At the Huygens Institute, she is working on the development of language technology for historical research. Both projects revolve around the development of domain-specific and linguistically motivated language technology. For GLOBALISE, she is working on ‘event extraction’, with the aim of making the VOC archives searchable at the level of ‘events’, such as the departure of a ship, the forging of an alliance, or the murder of a person.
