Huygens director Dirk van Miert on Denmark’s farewell to the letter
The American news channel CNN (Cable News Network) reported that the Danish state postal service PostNord delivered its last letter on 30 December 2025. This marks the end of a postal tradition that is more than 400 years old. CNN spoke to Dirk van Miert of the Huygens Institute about the significance of this decision.
According to Van Miert, the end of letter post marks an important turning point in the history of communication. He expects that physical letters will increasingly carry personal and intimate messages. The knowledge networks that existed for centuries through correspondence will continue online, making knowledge more accessible, but also allowing disinformation to spread more quickly.
Due to digitisation and the sharp decline in the number of letters sent, the Danish postal service is no longer economically viable. PostNord will now focus entirely on parcel delivery.
