The Mondrian Papers is a large-scale digital edition project by the Huygens Institute in collaboration with the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History). The aim of the project is to make the complete correspondence and theoretical texts of Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) accessible worldwide, in short, all the ‘papers’ of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, for scholarship and the general public.

The digital edition provides access to letters, essays, facsimiles, translations, annotations and an online catalogue raisonné – a complete and scientifically documented overview of all known works by Mondrian, including images, information about technique, dimensions, dating and provenance.

Scientific significance

Mondrian recorded his ideas in approximately 75 theoretical texts, which until now had only been partially published. His extensive correspondence is also an indispensable source for research into his artistic development, his theoretical views on abstraction and neoplasticism, his international network and his personal life.

All letters and writings have been published in their original language with a full English translation. The edition also contains facsimiles of the originals, scholarly annotations (in English) and images of the works of art mentioned.
