Tamara Kiewiet studied Literary and Cultural Analysis and obtained a master’s degree in Book Studies, specialising in medieval manuscripts at the University of Amsterdam.
Her PhD research focuses on the functions of hand images in medieval manuscripts (900–1550) and their role in the transfer of knowledge. Tamara Kiewiet analyses the relationships between image and text, the codicological placement and traces of use, and examines the role of these images within medieval knowledge practices.
In addition to visual analysis, her project focuses on textual references to hands in medieval Latin sources, developing a taxonomy and terminology to describe hand images, and compiling a systematic inventory.
Since October 2024, Tamara has been working on the Metamorfoze project for the digitisation of medieval manuscripts at the KB, the Dutch National Library. She remains involved in this project alongside her PhD research.
