Holly Riach awarded Thijssen-Schoute Fellowship 2026

The Huygens Institute warmly congratulates Holly Riach on being awarded the Thijssen-Schoute Fellowship 2026. During her fellowship, Riach will work on Modelling Miscellaneity: Early Modern Knowledge Production through the Lens of Historical Reconstruction. In this project, she is developing experimental methods to better understand early modern manuscripts by creating three-dimensional book models.

One of Holly Riach’s favourite manuscripts is particularly striking due to its unusual binding. Image from The Huntington Library, San Marino, California (HM 60413).

About Holly Riach

Holly Riach is a PhD candidate at Leiden University, conducting her research as part of the ERC Consolidator Grant project FEATHERS, led by Professor Nadine Akkerman. Her work explores the collaborative creation of manuscript collections (miscellanies) in early modern England (1558–1642). She investigates the social and material factors that shaped these texts and what they reveal about knowledge production in the period.

About the Thijssen-Schoute Fellowship

The fellowship is awarded annually by the Huygens Institute in partnership with the Dr C. Louise Thijssen-Schoute Foundation. It offers early-career researchers a three-month residency within the Knowledge and Art Practices research group at the Huygens Institute. Fellows receive a monthly stipend of 2,000,- euro and complete their stay with a research report. The fellowship was created to give advanced PhD students and recent graduates (within three years of completing their doctorate) the opportunity to continue or develop their research. Applications for the 2027 fellowship will open in early 2026.
