Margit van der Steen

Biography

After studying History at Radboud University Nijmegen, Margit van der Steen was affiliated with Utrecht University for ten years as director of the Dutch Women’s Studies Association. In 2003, she participated in the United Nations General Assembly as a representative of the Dutch government. She is director/owner of AETAS, an independent office of expertise focusing on questions concerning age, gender and diversity. Since 2001 she has worked as an independent researcher and adviser to ministries, the police, research institutes and civil society organisations. Since 2010 she has been a (part time) guest researcher at the Centre for Modern Urban Studies (The Hague campus of Leiden University). As of 15 May 2011 she has been working (part time) at Huygens ING. She is chair of the Dutch-Belgian Gender History Association and a member of the board of the Biography Working Group. In 2006 she began researching the life of sociologist and feminist Hilda Verwey-Jonker (1908-2004), and on 24 February 2011 at Leiden University she defended her PhD thesis entitled: Drift en koers. De levens van Hilda Verwey-Jonker (1908-2004).
