The years around 1900 were a period of major change in society, cultural life, politics and science. There were many – frequently intensive – contacts between people active in these different fields. The project ‘Correspondence around 1900′ brings together over 5,000 letters written by some 530 individuals working in different disciplines within a single online source publication. This collection allows the user to simultaneously analyse and interpret major events and developments in the period between roughly 1875 and 1925 through the eyes of a variety of correspondents. The publication offers transcripts and colour facsimiles of the originals, as well as brief biographies of the correspondents that pay special attention to the nature of their activities and the disciplines in which they worked. Each letter is accompanied by a fixed set of meta-data, allowing the user to conduct targeted searches within the entirety of the collection.
The Witsen correspondence, which consists of over 2,000 documents, will be published in it is entirety. In the case of Verwey, the project will be sharing over 3,000 letters written between 1880 and 1895 from his personal archives.
